St. Maximillian Kolbe

St. Maximilian Kolbe (Aug. 14th)

Raimund Kolbe was born in Poland in 1894. He studies in the college of the Franciscans in Rome and enters the novitiate with the name Maximilian Maria. Ordained priest in 1918, he founded the Militia of Immaculate Mary for the conversion of men by way of their unconditional dedication to the Virgin Mary, an order that was distinguished for its intense work. He was deported to the concentration camp of Auschwitz, where he offered his life in exchange for that of a man who has a wife and children and died of starvation on August 14, 1941. He was canonized in 1982. He is depicted in the habit of a minor conventual friar or sometimes with the uniform of the deported.
